A Prospect Of Plenty

A prospect of plenty main

Antique Painting: A Prosect of Plenty

Vale of the Great Dairies-1822

Wooden sign 50 x 33 inches. Late 19C.

This is a scene of the Frome Valley in Dorset immortalised by author Thomas Hardy in his classic 1891 novel 'Tess of the d'Urbervilles.' The Valley of the Great Dairies the lush, low-lying Frome Valley where Tess goes to work at Talbothays Dairy. Hardy describes it as a 'Prospect of Plenty' , a fertile, milk skimming paradise of rich green grass and massive herds of cattle, symbolising a period of hope and passion in Tess's life.

The sign captures the romanticised pre-industrial peak of British Pastoral farming that Hardy so vividly detailed across his works.
