Alfred Wheeler (1852 – 1932)

Alfred Wheeler was born near Bath, Somerset, England in 1852. He specialised in hunt scenes and animal portraiture, particularly horses, following in the footsteps of his father, John Alfred (Arnold) Wheeler, who was also highly regarded for similar work.

Career and Commissions

  • Painted horses and dogs for the gentry, making a lucrative living through commissions
  • Exhibited from time to time at the Royal Academy and other major venues
  • Worked extensively on commissioned pieces, often keeping him too busy for frequent exhibitions

Legacy
