James Howe (1780-1839)
Scottish equestrian & sporting painter, born in Skirling, Peeblesshire, the son of a minister. Howe worked closely with the Highland Society of Scotland in the early 19th Century & is represented at Reading University in a bond collection of prints, published by Ballentines, Edinburgh, 1832.
His work is usually signed and dated. Howe went to London in 1806 to paint horses for George III.
