John Alfred Wheeler (1821-1903)

Equestrian, animal & sporting painter, born at Andoversford, near Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

Wheeler joined the army with the Queens Dragoon Guards, The Bays, where he gained a practical knowledge of horses. On his discharge in 1847 he took up painting, a profession which had previously been discouraged by his family. He appears to have been self-taught and made his base in Bath. Although later moving to London to be near the galleries, a move which he regretted.

His patrons numbered many well-known sporting personalities including the Duke of Beaufort for whom he painted 'The Beaufort Hunt', & the Meet of the Coaching Club, London.
