Francis Sartorius (1734 – 1804)

Francis Sartorius – born into the acclaimed Sartorius family of artists – was an English painter of horses, horse-racing and hunting scenes.

He was also known as Francis Sartorius the Elder to distinguish him from his grandson Francis Sartorius Jr.

Throughout his career, Fancis is believed to have painted the famous racehorse “Eclipse” more times than any other artist in his time.

Francis Sartorius appeared in 2 editions of the of The Sporting Magazine during the early 1790’s and has had 38 pieces exhibited in galleries across London including the Royal Academy, the Society of Arts and the Free Society of Artists.
